2015

It's been a while since I posted something here and since I got a new job/trainee position (spoilers alert) I think it would be wise to start posting more and more, started with the recap of 2015

I would like to say that 2015 was not an easy year for me, some people say 25 years of age is the age when you encounter your quarter life crisis and that was obviously true for me but I can finally say that I made it!

Here is a quick recap of my 2015.

  • January, making New Year's resolutions.

  • February, Turning 25.

  • January-June, sending lots of applications and went to a handful of interviews.

  • June 29th, First day of work as an ERP & Report Developer in Liljendal (80km from Helsinki)

  • October, So close yet so far from getting a BI-consultant position.

  • June-December, Worked as an ERP & Report Developer and drove 160km each day to and from work.

  • December, Nailed a job/trainee position in Big Data and Business Intelligence.

I am beyond grateful and happy for what I have earned and learned during 2015 and as my stepfather keeps telling me "life is a learning curve" and I am pretty sure that I will continue learning.

My new job focuses on Data Analytics which has been my passion for quite a long time, it has 12 training days which is really cool because I can learn and improve my skills with the help of great teachers and my own mentor.

One thing for sure is I will not waste this opportunity and as my good friend/Strict Guru would say FOCUS

I will utilize this github as my learning diaries so stay tune! Feel free to comment below!

Less Education, More Babies?

I came across with a short discussion and idea of how less educated countries tend to have more babies than more educated countries. Might be true or might be not. Let's see...

Growing up in Indonesia but raised with both Finnish and Indonesian culture and currently residing in Finland, I have mixed feeling about this matter. As a comparison according to CIA for year 2014 per 1000 population Indonesia has 17,04 births while Finland has 10,35 births. There is not enough data in CIA about Finnish literacy rate but I think it's 100% for age 15 and over, while Indonesia has 92,8% for age 15 and over. This doesn't support my original idea therefore Imma let you finish but I will show you a better understanding of this using Big Data! Oh yeah, sounds cool huh.

Back in 2014 I came across with a beautiful ad by Danish goverment and a travel agency during my Big Data course, it's called Do It for Denmark! The idea is simple, if you make babies during your holiday Danish government would pay for that particular holiday. The video shows how Denmark is struggling with their birth rate, for such country with high education Denmark doesn't have enough birth rate to support their ageing population. I believe this is happening in almost all Nordic countries, including Finland.

With amazing teamwork with my beautiful friends and after blood, sweat and tears were sacrificed we managed to create one sophisticated presentation about this matter. Here is a short description about our presentation.

Process Diagrams

making babies

To put it in simple words, we listened to our teacher, we read and discussed, we gathered data and formulated hypothesis, we studied the technical parts, we retrieved data from data sources, we uploaded the data to Hadoop, we merged and choose the right data attributes and finally we created analysis and report in Microsoft BI dashboard.

We created the right relationships and choose the right attributes as follows. diagram workflow

diagram workflow

And finally Drum Roll........ Tadaaaaa here is our final results

Final Presentation

We choose Business Intelligence Dashboard instead of IBM BigInsights Dashboard because we happened to have a Business Intelligence course going on at the very same time and me personally I like the visual in Business Intelligence better than IBM BigInsights. MS BI is more user friendly as most of the functionality derive from MS Excel and also more colors like rainbow!

From the diagram above we can justify that in year 2013 both in Finland and Germany where the enrolment rate to primary school are pretty close to 100%, people tend to have less babies. The number shows that per 1000 people the birth rate in Finland and Germany are about 9, while in average in Mali, Niger and Zambia where the enrolment rate is lower than in Finland and Germany, the birth rate are about higher at 47 per 1000 people.

Finally we can determine that our hypothesis was somehow true however there are many other factors that might affect this such as cultures and religions. I am not going to go any further because those two factors might be too much as I am no expert in those two factors and also I am tired...

I have to save some energy because it's chest day today!

Data is the new world oil! Sort of.

I am always fascinated by data and this dates back since I was a little boy. I realized when I was a little boy that I always had the hunch for combination of words and numbers, and ever since my brain always tries to solve the puzzle I created from words or numbers I see.

Recently I just graduated from one university of applied sciences in Finland and during that time I realized how HIP data is. I mean everyone keeps talking about analytics, Big Data, Business Intelligence, search engine optimization and others. The trend might not yet reached its peak but pretty soon I am sure that we would be running our cars with data heheh.

Graduating with an Information Technology degree and living in Finland I am certain that I have chosen the right career path, even though till now I have not found the best suitable IT job for me yet but I am sure I will find it soon, VERY SOON

Talking about data as the new world oil sounds a little bit too much and often people are misled by data driven attitude. In my opinion everyone should never rely only on data, I know data, information and knowledge never lie but in order to achieve your goals you have to always know what do you want to achieve, why do you want to achieve and how you are going to achieve. Therefore it is always a result driven, with the help of data.

One thing that concerns me with the utilization of data is for example when I am searching for protein shake on Google Search, in just a matter of minutes I would see a protein shake advertisement on my Facebook. I mean how terrifiying that is that someone, somewhere and somewhat is watching your every movement and it is not pretty.

Oh well, it is just another opinion of mine on another rainy Tuesday. I will write more when something comes in mind. Meanwhile, enjoy your week and for me I have to enjoy my daily routine of searching for jobs, writing cover letters and sending my applications, oh yeah it is cardio day today!

First Post

Finally I got my personal and very own website/blog up and running thanks to my really good friend Ville. Took sometime for me to understand how Ruby, Git and Jekyll work but finally I got it.

My awesome blog/website

It is a cloudy easter day filled with a little bit of hangover but I managed to get many things done.

I realize this blog/website is far from perfect but I am trying to be as productive as possible and having one of your own wouldn't hurt. So sit tight and enjoy the ride because more annoying posts are coming!

It's a matter of attitude, "How bad do you want it?"
